This counteracts the depletion of nitrogen from the soil in the initial breakdown of the chips and sawdust. Hollies will benefit from a feeding each February or March, if commercial fertilizers are used - or later when growth is active, if the liquid plant foods are used. A gardener is fortunate if he can apply an annual dressing of old manure which may be supplemented with cotton seed meal.

Hollies need to be shaped in their early years. Long, awkward shoots should be pruned; this work is best done in March before growth commences. Nipping back the tips of many of the branches will induce them to send out side branches to fill in the main body of the plant. If a plant is thin near the top and an ungainly leader has forged ahead, the appearance of the plant can be helped by tying one or two side branches in an upright position to fill in around the leader. The actual logs themselves when being prepared are green and will only have been cut and hauled a few days or weeks before. Unlike milled logs these are allowed to air dry only as kiln drying is a very expensive process, as these need to be dried whilst they are still their full lengths after cutting.

As well as pine and spruce being favorite trees for making handcrafted log cabins from other trees that are used are the Douglas fir, Oak, Juniper, Cyprus and Alpine Fir. The last tree mentioned is also known as a True Fir.

How much your log cabins cost not only depends on the way in which the logs have been prepared, but also the size of the property. Plus the amount of time and effort that it takes to actually construct the cabin. After fixing all the tiles, you can leave it for one day and next day with the help of trowel fill grout in between adjacent tiles. Remove extra grout with a sponge and run a mop over tiles. Then leave it for a week so that tiles get strongly attached to the floor.
