Adapting Your Home Furniture Lineup for the Arrival of a Newborn Baby

By Byron Jonas

Every parent in the world knows that when a newborn child arrives in the family, everything at home is bound to change: from the overall emotional tone and atmosphere of the home all the way down to the finest details regarding safety, such as furniture selections. As a matter of fact, surprising though it may sound, furniture is going to be an area of significant change after the arrival of a newborn at home.

Safety needs to be the issue of utmost consideration when a new baby is received home, no matter what. Safety is quite clearly more important than any other aspect (such as aesthetics, size, etc.) when selecting your baby furniture, so remember that when shopping around.

You'll have to make sure that all furniture you have had prior to the arrival of your newborn child doesn't present any unnecessary risks; that is to say, all jagged edges, pointy corners, etc., will need to be taken care, just like protruding nails, screws, etc. Also, things such as stairwell guards and childproof cupboard and cabinet latches will need to be implemented.

As a matter of safety, you need to verify that things such as the crib are built by reliable brands that make products that don't fall apart; you wouldn't want that to happen with your baby inside! Quality craftsmanship is hence a key concern, and though this may be hard to discern simply upon plain sight there are other ways of finding out, and with time the quality will definitely make itself evident.

You will most likely come to possess several new items of furniture due to the arrival of your new baby, and so you'll want to make sure you get the right items. Your kid will of course first and foremost need a proper crib and other furniture to store baby supplies and so forth, but furthermore having some furniture for the kid to enjoy him or herself will be a good decision, all of which implies broad furniture changes in your home to properly welcome the little rugrat!

In terms of furnishing your child with a good place to catch some shuteye, a good crib is, as mentioned, essential. In this regard, proper sidebars and a good latching mechanism that is childproof will be crucial, as well as making sure that the former are actually taller than the infant.

In addition to the crib or cot, you should consider having a changing station which can be mounted on top with ease and that can be easily removed as well. In such a way, you will make the whole process of pre-bedtime diaper changes that much easier and quicker. Separately (of course, both options are possible) you could also have a drawer or shelf piece of furniture with a permanent changing station set on top.

Finally, every kid needs a good place to store all their many toys. Along with the child's crib, the toy chest is likely to receive the most wear and tear over time, so go for a sturdy build here, though of course don't get something that is so heavy your kid won't be able to even lift the lid! - 33393
